A program designed to connect veterans with companion animals is helping make pet adoption more affordable while providing the benefits of animal companionship.
The Vets Need Pets Program, a partnership involving the Erie VA Medical Center and local animal shelter Because You Care (BYC), offers eligible veterans up to a 50% reduction in pet adoption fees. Veterans do not need to meet any financial requirements to participate, as the program is open to veterans of all income levels who may benefit from pet ownership.
VA staff are encouraged to identify veterans who are interested in owning a pet, are financially and emotionally able to care for an animal and live in housing that permits pets to apply for this opportunity…
