Cathedral Prep swimmer Maria Costa sets record in this event during dual meet vs. McDowell

Fair warning to the Cathedral Prep employee who changes names and times on the Hallman Aquatics Center’s board of records.

That person should consider Maria Costa’s new pool and team record time for the girls 200-yard individual medley as a temporary installment.

The junior has another in mind for that event and it’s significantly lower than the one she accomplished Monday.

Costa was a four-time winner for the Ramblers when they beat the rival McDowell Trojans 122-63. None stood out more than her 200 IM win.

Costa completed the four-discipline event in 2 minutes, 5.69 seconds. That obliterated the former pool record of 2:09.19, held by Villa Maria graduate Megan Maholic since 2021, and Costa’s team record of 2:07.15 she established earlier this season.

Quite an achievement for someone who said she had no plans to compete in the 200 IM for the 2023-24 Ramblers before coach Sonya Whitman and her staff broached the subject.

“I guess they needed me for this event,” Costa said. “I really prepared for it once I knew I was seriously getting into it.”
