Free Memorial Day meals served at Eugene park for those in need

EUGENE, Ore. – The local group Neighbors Feeding Neighbors served a free breakfast and takeaway lunch on Memorial Day at Washington Jefferson Park in Eugene.

Volunteers fed anyone who showed up for a little more than an hour. Organizers say they typically don’t serve meals on a Monday but decided to offer food for the holiday because the FOOD for Lane County dining room was closed. They wanted to make sure veterans especially had something to eat.

“We make sure that the meal that they take away is about 2,000 calories, enough to last them for a day,” said Lisa Levsen, the board president of Neighbors Feeding Neighbors. “So between breakfast and the takeaway lunch that they have, that is specifically prepared to make sure that they’re getting enough calories for them to survive until tomorrow. And tomorrow there will be some other food options for them.”…
