EUGENE, Ore. — In its continuing work to make transportation safer through a variety of projects and initiatives, the City of Eugene has facilitated speed reductions on several local streets. In July, speed limits on Goodpasture Island Road were reduced to 30 mph east of Delta Highway and 35 mph west of Delta Highway. Green Acres Road also saw a change from 35 to 25 mph between Delta Highway and Norkenzie Road.
Speed reductions are just one of several street design tactics that the City uses to improve safety, along with crosswalks, adjusting signal timing and others, city officials said. A recent effort has been underway to lower posted speed limits in areas where data and daily experience show it can make a meaningful difference. Lowering speed limits is a cost-effective way to reduce the severity of crashes and is one of many strategies in the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan, the city said.
National data shows that in 2024, speeding contributed to nearly a third of all traffic fatalities in the United States. In Eugene, the impact of speeding is especially visible in the data, as 70 percent of traffic deaths in 2025 occurred on streets posted 35 miles per hour or higher…
