Local businesses damaged by West Eugene fire

A vacant home was completely destroyed and three nearby businesses were damaged in a second alarm fire in West Eugene on Sunday evening.

Just before 6:30 p.m., Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) crews were called to a report of a possible house fire near Highway 99 and Barger Drive. Firefighters responding to the area could see a large column of smoke and arrived to find a fully involved house fire on the east side of the railroad tracks, behind Emerald Pool and Patio in the 1800 block of Highway 99.

The fire spread from the property into overgrown blackberries and other dry vegetation between the railroad tracks and businesses along Highway 99. With challenging access and the fire advancing, incident commanders called for a second alarm, bringing additional crews to the scene.
