EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Hundreds of Evansville children received free backpacks and school supplies Saturday during Germania Mannerchor’s Back to School Bash on North Fulton Avenue.
The organization gave away more than 220 backpacks in 48 minutes. Each bag was filled with school supplies donated by local businesses, individual donors, and Germania Mannerchor members.
Event moved to July for first time
Organizers shifted the event from its traditional spot on the Saturday of Volks Fest to July this year, after the festival was pushed back several weeks. Jody Wassmer, of Germania Mannerchor, said the change was intentional.
“We decided to do this in July because we wanted the kids to have the backpacks before school started,” Wassmer said.
