EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – For more than two hours overnight, a stubborn fire keeps Evansville firefighters at bay.
According to fire officials, around 1:40 a.m., the Evansville Fire Department (EFD) was dispatched after multiple callers reported a building on fire in the 800 block of North Fourth Avenue.
Officials say when firefighters arrived, they reported visible fire and smoke coming from the building and declared a working fire. Crews immediately started to bring the fire under control while conducting a primary search of the structure. Due to reports of homeless activity at the property and possible people inside before the fire began, firefighters worked to determine if anyone was inside. No one was located during the search.

The EFD says as crews worked to control the fire, firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions involving multiple areas of the building. A portion of the roof began to collapse during operations, prompting an order of everyone to exit the building.
