What is the ‘Memorial Day Murph’? Texas takes on a CrossFit tradition honoring fallen Navy SEAL

The “Memorial Day Murph” was originally introduced as a CrossFit workout to honor Navy Lieutenant Michael Patrick Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.

Today, the workout — one of Murphy’s favorites, which he used to call “Body Armor” — is one of CrossFit’s most famous “hero” workouts. It is performed across the country and internationally on Memorial Day in remembrance of Murphy and other military service members.

While the late lieutenant was from Suffolk County, NY, his actions in Afghanistan saved the life of Houston-area native Marcus Luttrell. Today the state of Texas boasts 33 official hosts of the Murph Challenge, the official annual fundraiser for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, more than any other state…
