LITTLE ROCK, Ark. —Families, veterans and community members gathered Monday at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery to honor the men and women who gave their lives while serving the country during a solemn Memorial Day ceremony.
The event featured the laying of a wreath, the sounding of taps and moments of reflection for the nearly 14,000 veterans buried at the cemetery.
The origins of Memorial Day and how it has evolved
Vietnam veteran John Funkhouser, who served from 1965 to 1969, said Memorial Day is an important reminder of those who never made it home.
“Everybody my age knew somebody who died in Vietnam,” Funkhouser said. “We need to remember those people not only from Vietnam, but World War I, World War II, Civil War, all the wars our people have participated in and protected our country.”…
