Ehly: Tech-free classrooms only work if they’re well-intentioned

At least half of the classes I’ve taken this year have restricted or outright banned all use of technology during class. It feels like that number is only going up, and not just at the University of Oregon.

An Oregon executive order that went into effect Oct. 31, 2025, prohibits the use of personal devices for students at K-12 public schools.

And honestly, I understand exactly why these restrictions have been put in place. In the classes where I’m not able to shop online, work on other assignments or read the text messages of the person in front of me, I’ve actually been able to pay attention and better retain the information…
