Summit County foster home shortage pushes children away from their communities, fueling new effort to keep kids closer

AKRON, Ohio — More than 700 children are in Summit County’s foster care system, but just over 100 foster homes are available.

It’s a shortage that often sends kids away from the communities they know when they need stability most, and it’s now fueling a new push to keep more children closer to home. For now, there simply are not enough foster homes in Summit County or nearby to meet the need.

“It means additional trauma,” Ann Ream of Summit County Children Services told 3News in an interview. “Unfortunately, when children have to be placed outside of their community, we’re changing things up.”…
