Newport News mayor presses Navy to fast-track $450M sailor housing project

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Questions are mounting over a major Navy-backed housing development in Newport News as city leaders warn delays could have far-reaching impacts on military readiness, workforce stability, and regional resources.

In a letter sent Tuesday to Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones urged federal officials to move quickly on a proposed $450 million redevelopment project backed by Hunt Military Communities. Jones said the letter was also sent to Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.

The redevelopment project would replace aging facilities, including Huntington Hall, and create housing for thousands of sailors in downtown Newport News. Plans also include retail space and additional amenities designed to improve the quality of life for service members and their families…
