Man accused of killing wife found in freezer appears in Norfolk court

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A man accused of killing his wife, after police found her body in a freezer inside a Downtown Norfolk apartment, appeared in court Tuesday.

David Varela, a 38-year-old Navy reservist charged in the death of Lina Guerra, appeared in a Norfolk court, where defense attorneys requested a competency evaluation.

The judge granted the request and ordered the evaluation, while leaving Varela’s next court date unchanged. His preliminary hearing remains scheduled for July 21.
