Budget bill would exempt Micron from permit for backup diesel power

ALBANY — The Hochul administration has added language to the state budget that would waive state permitting requirements for backup diesel generators Micron Technology intends to build at its planned $100 billion megafab in suburban Syracuse.

Micron is planning to have 118 diesel-powered generators installed at the megafab to provide backup power should the site lose electricity from the power grid.

Power outages can cause major headaches for chip factories, requiring multimillion-dollar manufacturing “tools” to be reset and cleaned, and the potential loss of chip wafers that can be ruined during the outages…
