A security patrol truck parked outside the West Oaks Mall food court in Ocoee went up in flames early Wednesday morning, and a 19-year-old is now sitting in the Orange County jail with no bond.
According to an arrest affidavit reported by WKMG ClickOrlando, officers were called around 12:39 a.m. to find a small fire burning on the rear left side of a white Ford Maverick patrol pickup. Fire crews quickly knocked down the flames, and no injuries were reported, but the incident escalated fast from nuisance blaze to felony case.
Investigators say firefighters recovered an item with a black paper backing marked “gofireproducts” near the burned area. A search of a nearby drain turned up a pair of orange gloves. Security footage reportedly shows a man walking up to the truck, then heading toward that same drain. Police later identified the man as 19-year-old Daniel Wright and arrested him on second-degree arson and criminal mischief charges.
How Investigators Zeroed In
The affidavit describes detectives working backward from the burned truck using the mall’s surveillance system. Investigators tracked the suspect’s path through the property, noting what they described as a distinctive bulge under a hoodie visible in the footage. Physical evidence recovered from the drain was then used to tie the person on camera to the scene, according to police. A later stop led to Wright’s arrest. Authorities have not said what they believe the motive was.
What The Charges Could Mean
Arson and criminal mischief fall under Chapter 806 of the Florida Statutes. Under state law, second-degree arson applies to willful and unlawful fires that damage property and is classified as a felony. Criminal mischief can range from a misdemeanor to a felony, depending on how much damage is done and how widespread the impact is. As outlined by Florida Statutes, penalties climb with the degree of the alleged offense and specific circumstances surrounding the case.
Mall Back In The Spotlight
West Oaks Mall has not exactly been quiet on the law-enforcement front. Late last year, Ocoee police carried out a sweep that seized counterfeit merchandise from several stores in the shopping center. Detectives collected business records and items they say were being marketed as imitation luxury goods…
