Albuquerque mom who admitted to abusing her baby granted conditional discharge

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque woman who admitted to abusing her one-year-old daughter learned her fate in court on Thursday. Alexis Bernal pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse in a 2024 case where she took her daughter to the hospital with severe injuries.

Bernal learned that she won’t serve any prison time if she follows court orders for the next five years. “I put my baby and I in a situation I will regret for the rest of my life. I take responsibility for that, especially because one day I will have to explain everything to her,” said Bernal to Judge Britt Baca during her sentencing hearing.

In 2024, Bernal took her one-year-old girl to the University of New Mexico Hospital. She told doctors her baby’s leg got stuck in a carrier, but the claim didn’t match the injuries. Doctors found evidence of several injuries over time, including a broken arm, leg, and foot, along with broken ribs, bleeding gums, pulled neck muscles, bruises, and scratches…
