CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — On May 10, 1919, a deadly race riot exploded through the streets of downtown Charleston. It would be one of the many race riots across the nation that year- sparking what would be known as the Red Summer.
In 1919, there were pockets of Black neighborhoods near Upper King, Spring and Morris streets and on the east side of downtown Charleston. Neighborhoods where Black-owned businesses thrived, and Black homeowners lived.
