1 dead following shooting involving Albuquerque police

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – One person is dead after a shooting involving Albuquerque police. Police did not release much information but said the shooting happened at Central Ave. and San Mateo Blvd. Police said one man is dead, and no officers were injured. APD Chief Cecily Barker said that at least two officers fired.

Chief Barker said officers were in the area because of reports of a person trespassing, and when they made contact, the man fled. Chief Barker said an officer told him to stop, and another officer arrived. She said that the man hid behind a pillar at a Walgreens. She said that he had a knife, and officers told him to put it down multiple times. She said that he then charged at an officer with the knife, and officers fired. He died on scene. Chief Barker said that an officer pulled out his taser, but it was not used.

Chief Barker said they have identified the man and believe that he was arrested more than 30 times, had felony charges prior to the shooting, was on probation, and had cut an ankle monitor off in the last few weeks…
