Kalamazoo mom avoids jail after toddler shoots self with unsecured firearm

KALAMAZOO, MI — A woman whose 3-year-old daughter shot herself with a loaded gun stored in an unlocked console of the mother’s car will face zero jail time.

Ashley Lynn Howard, 36, received a delayed sentence on Monday, June 1, a little over a year after Howard’s then 3-year-old daughter shot herself.

Howard’s child had been playing with a sibling in her mother’s car outside of the family’s residence on East Vine Street, at around 9 p.m. Saturday, May 3, when she found her mother’s loaded 9mm pistol, according to court records…
