MADISON, Wis. (WJFW) — A legal battle between the state of Wisconsin and the Lac du Flambeau tribe reached a federal courtroom in Madison Friday.
The Western District of Wisconsin held a preliminary hearing in the state’s lawsuit against the tribe over attempted restrictions on walleye and muskellunge fishing. In April, the tribe closed 19 lakes on its reservation to nontribal fishing of walleye and muskellunge, citing dangerously low populations based on an early spring study.
