Heart of Mary Catholic School in Mobile faces eviction for unpaid bills

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Heart of Mary, the oldest Black Catholic school in Mobile, has been off limits to faculty since last week, and the historic school may have to find a new home.

The Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish terminated the school’s lease over unpaid rent and utilities. Although school is out, students of Heart of Mary sit outside the locked gates along with parents and teachers.

The Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish sent the Heart of Mary School a letter on Thursday stating they are cutting ties with the school immediately due to unpaid rent and utilities.

The principal, Jekirra Johnson, said they did pay for January’s rent but were told the Archbishop would cover the cost for the rest of the school year.

The letter said the parish now owns the property and everything inside. Tanya Wesley is a middle school teacher and went to the school on Friday to get her classroom belongings and important documents, but the gates outside were locked.

“They want to terminate the lease,” said middle school teacher Tanya Wesley. “We have 150+ students now enrolled for next year, and here it is. They have no place to go,” Wesley continued…
