Charlie Murphy, who dominated the Capital Region amateur golf scene in the 1970s and ’80s, heads a seven-person Class of 2026 for the New York State Golf Association’s Hall of Fame.
The class, which includes three other area golfers who are to be inducted posthumously, will be honored at a banquet in late October or early November at Wolferts Roost.

George Burns
Like the late comedian, actor and singer of the same name, Burns was born in New York, but the similarities end there. Burns, the golfer, now 76, won eight amateur titles between 1972 and 1975, including the 1974 NYSGA Men’s Amateur.
That led to a standout pro career, which included 571 PGA Tour events. He had four Tour victories and eight runners-up, including the 1981 U.S. Open. He also won two European Tour titles in 1975. He now lives in Florida.
Mike Hulbert
