What used to be a wide-open concrete box is divvied up into the below-grade space of our dreams—a basement with cozy rooms, a smart design, and a full-on apartment vibe.
Angela and Keith Webb moved into their Greenville County, SC, home knowing the unfinished basement held potential. “We were just saving money and budgeting for when we could finish it [into a bonus play or hangout space],” Angela says. In the meantime, they pitched their six-person tent on the concrete floor so their two boys had a special spot for sleepovers or to watch movies projected onto an unfinished wall.

The space mirrors layouts common to a main level, anchored by a living area, kitchen, and dining zone, while a bedroom, two bathrooms, and rooms for laundry, working out, and storage bring added function.
“This basement was a special opportunity because we had height and lots of light,” Campbell says. “It felt more like an underutilized space.” For Campbell, each new space needed a clear purpose—some established through architectural elements not typical of a basement.

A painted wood mantel, brick chimney that tapers toward the ceiling, and knotty wood doors introduce a subtle European influence. Layered rugs, books, and throw pillows help the room feel like a natural extension of the main level.
Behind it, in the darkest area of the basement, French doors open to a media room. The kitchen is positioned adjacent to the stairwell, convenient to the living area, and simultaneously tucked away…
