Amid evidence he wasn’t there, charges dropped against man accused in Joe Cain Day shooting

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A judge has dismissed charges against a man who had been accused of participating in a downtown shootout on the night of Joe Cain Day, supporting claims by the defense that he was not involved.

The shooting at about 11 p.m. on Feb. 15 sprung from what investigators describe as an argument between two men inside a nightclub. Police say that dispute spilled out onto Dauphin Street, and that five innocent people suffered gunshot wounds.

Police brought five counts of first-degree assault against two men, Deveon Deangelos Jeffery and Cornelius Coleman. But Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood said Tuesday that Jeffery was not one of the shooters.
