The San Francisco Police Officers Association joined Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Bilal Mahmood and police officials Thursday to unveil a commemorative street designation honoring an officer critically injured in the line of duty nearly a decade ago.
The noon ceremony took place at 301 Eddy St. in the Tenderloin neighborhood, where Officer Elia Lewin-Tankel sustained life-altering injuries while responding to a call for service on Oct. 18, 2017. The new designation adds the commemorative name “Officer Lewin-Tankel Way” to the 300 block of Eddy Street, between Leavenworth and Jones streets, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
While on bicycle patrol in 2017, Lewin-Tankel responded to reports of an armed suspect fleeing police. As he arrived on the scene, the suspect struck him with a vehicle, leaving him unconscious and critically injured. Lewin-Tankel survived the collision but was left permanently disabled…
