STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The borough’s great scientific minds of the future were on full display Wednesday as hundreds of students gathered at the Borough President’s Hall of Science at the Michael J. Petrides School in Sunnyside during the District 31 Science Expo.
Students from 28 schools, from elementary through high schools, came to the science expo, which highlighted an impressive range of work in the fields of science, engineering, art and math.
Though winners were named at the end of the expo, the event was not billed as a competition, but rather a way to celebrate the innovation of the borough’s students, according to Dr. Roderick Palton, superintendent for Staten Island schools in District 31.
“This is not a competition, this is a celebration of your creativity,” Palton told the gathered students.
“One day, one of you is going to create something that’s going to change the world and you’re going to be up on this wall,” he continued, while gesturing to a wall featuring the pictures of scientific pioneers…
