‘It’s just sad’ | Last bell rings for 12 Houston ISD campuses as students, parents say goodbye

HOUSTON — The final school bell rang Thursday for students at 12 Houston ISD campuses that are permanently closing, marking the end of an emotional chapter for families, staff and surrounding communities.

Earlier this year, the Houston ISD Board of Managers approved the closures, citing declining enrollment, aging facilities and staffing challenges. Students affected by the closures will attend different campuses beginning this fall.

Among the schools closing is Port Houston Elementary School in Houston’s Pleasantville area, where parents and students gathered on the last day of school for a “final bell walkout.”…
