Lafayette unlikely to criminalize homeless camps as state ban heads to governor’s desk

The Lafayette City Council is unlikely to consider an ordinance establishing rules and guidelines for removing homeless encampments in the city.

Talks about the ordinance, which would have made camping on public property a crime punishable by jail time and a fine, have stalled while the council monitors developments of a similar state law, said Lafayette City Council member Kenneth Boudreaux.

“I can say there doesn’t seem to be any indication that an ordinance would be coming forth any time soon,” Boudreax said. “Some of the state legislation that has been considered and brought forward, (the council is seeing) what impact that is going to have and to see of the need if any new ordinances actually is necessary.”…
