Shreveport Salvation Army to honor vets with donuts on National Donut Day

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Salvation Army of Northwest Louisiana (Shreveport Corps) will deliver donuts to local veterans Friday, June 5, at Overton Brooks Veterans Hospital and the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home at 9 a.m. This effort is to honor National Donut Day and what they call an 88-year-old tradition born on the battlefields of World War I.

National Donut Day falls on the first Friday of June each year, but the Salvation Army’s connection to the treat dates back to World War I, before the holiday existed.

In 1917, over 250 women in the organization traveled overseas to support U.S. troops on the front lines. Known as “Donut Lassies,” the volunteers made fresh donuts to serve while offering motivation, spiritual care, and essential supplies to the army men

When soldiers came home, the Donut Lassies carried credit for spreading the donut’s popularity across the country. In 1938, the Salvation Army’s Chicago chapter launched National Donut Day to honor their sacrifice and raise funds for neighbors struggling through the Great depression…
