Residents uncover more than 40 hidden graves at Suffolk’s Oak Lawn Cemetery

SUFFOLK, Va. — Concerned residents are working to restore Oak Lawn Cemetery, a historic Black cemetery in Suffolk, after years of neglect left many graves hidden beneath overgrowth and damaged by a lack of maintenance.

The cemetery, which serves as the final resting place for numerous veterans and generations of Suffolk families, has fallen into disrepair, according to residents who say conditions worsened after the death of the person who managed the foundation responsible for its care.
