Walkers lace up for heart health and cardiac arrest awareness

This year’s Capital Region Heart Walk bringing the community out to UAlbany Sunday morning. Its goal is to spread awareness on cardiac arrest and how to save lives.

The American Heart Association says 9 in 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest while not at a hospital die, and more than half don’t receive CPR from bystanders. To change that, organizers teaching attendees hands-only CPR, which can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. The walk being led by UAlbany’s athletics director, Mark Benson, who a few years ago went to the hospital after experiencing heart disease symptoms.
