As summer arrives in Naperville, families and neighbors look forward to cookouts, Fourth of July celebrations, bonfires, vacations, reunions and outdoor gatherings. While these seasonal traditions create lasting memories, it is important to keep safety top of mind to ensure everyone enjoys the summer responsibly.
Each year, more than 8,000 Americans are injured in fires and accidents related to fireworks and grilling, with more than half of those incidents occurring during the first week of July. Taking a few preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of injury and property damage.
Grilling
When grilling, proper maintenance and placement are essential. Whether using a gas or charcoal grill, regularly cleaning grease and debris buildup can help prevent dangerous flare-ups and grease fires. Residents should always keep a fire extinguisher nearby while cooking outdoors. In addition, propane tanks should be stored outdoors or in a well-ventilated shed — never inside a garage. Grills should also be positioned a safe distance from homes, decks, railings, and other combustible materials. A good rule of thumb is that if the grill lid can touch the house when opened, it’s too close.
Fireworks
Fireworks also present serious safety concerns. Improper use of fireworks causes more than 6,000 fires annually and results in millions of dollars in property damage nationwide. Residents should remember that sky lanterns are illegal in Illinois. And sparklers can burn at temperatures exceeding 1,800 degrees. Because of these risks, fireworks should be left to trained professionals and sparklers should always be kept away from small children.
Summer in Naperville should be a time for fun, celebration and making lasting memories with family and friends. By following a few simple safety precautions, everyone can enjoy a safe and enjoyable season…
