Walnut Creek’s Award-Winning New Pizza Spot is Finally Open

There are a lot of pizza places in Walnut Creek (and even more Italian spots!). But not many of them arrive with a global ranking attached.

After months of anticipation, Doppio Zero is officially open in downtown Walnut Creek. The new restaurant is located at 1522 N. Main St., in the former SanDai space, which longtime locals may also remember as the former PRIMA Ristorante (I certainly remember that one.)

And yes, this is the same Doppio Zero that has been recognized by 50 Top Pizza as one of the best artisan pizza chains in the world. So if you’ve been waiting for another serious pizza option in downtown Walnut Creek, this one is definitely worth having on your radar.

Doppio Zero started in Mountain View in 2014 and has since expanded around the Bay Area ever since, including locations in San Francisco, San Carlos, Concord and Campbell. The Walnut Creek location gives Contra Costa County another branch of the restaurant’s Neapolitan pizza and Southern Italian menu.

The name “Doppio Zero” refers to “00” flour, the finely milled Italian flour that’s specifically used for Neapolitan-style pizza dough. The restaurant embraces that tradition with wood-fired pizzas, housemade pastas and a broader Italian menu that’s not entirely pizza-focused…
