As Croatia prepares for the World Cup, Alexandria businesses and fans roll out the welcome mat

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — The FIFA World Cup doesn’t begin until later this week, but excitement is already building in Alexandria as Croatia’s national soccer team settles into its temporary home in Northern Virginia.

Outside the hotel where players were reportedly staying, fans gathered Tuesday wearing Croatia jerseys and carrying soccer balls and Sharpies, hoping for a chance to meet members of the team before the tournament begins.

“It’s one of the best things that ever happened,” said fan David Arbieto. “It’s a pleasure that Croatia is actually coming here to Alexandria. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

While Croatia’s World Cup matches will be played in other cities, Alexandria will serve as the team’s home base during the tournament. The team is expected to train at Episcopal High School while staying in the city between matches.
