Rhode Island lawmakers pass expansion of felony expungement eligibility

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — More Rhode Islanders with nonviolent felony convictions could become eligible to clear their criminal records under legislation passed by the General Assembly this week.

Current state law allows a person to seek expungement of a felony conviction if it is the only criminal charge on their record and at least 10 years have passed since they completed their sentence.

The legislation, which passed both the House and Senate, would expand eligibility by allowing people with up to four nonviolent felony convictions to petition for expungement 15 years after completing their final sentence…
