AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – In the latest edition of the Wellness Rundown, KAMR Local 4 News’ Anchor Mari Ferrel sat down with Summar Gallier, a NICU nurse to talk about what got her into nursing and her reaction when receiving 2026 BSA Nurse of the Year.
Growing up Gallier originally wanted to become a pharmacist. After much thought and prayers, she said, “I felt God leading me into nursing.” She attended West Texas A&M University to pursue that path.
When entering the workforce, she started at another local hospital and then went to BSA where she has been a NICU nurse for the last 21 years. When asked why she has been in the NICU department for so long, she said the comradery of the team is phenomenal. Gallier explained they have good teamwork inside and outside of work.

Gallier has also led efforts in retinopathy of prematurity prevention, also known as ROP. ROP is an eye disease that affects premature babies born before 31 weeks. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the disease affects the retina which is a tissue in the back of the eye. Babies with ROP have unwanted blood vessels growing on the retina.
