MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Police Department on Thursday warned of a rash of scammers posing as government officials.
Police said the scammers are contacting victims by phone call or text, pretending to be for agencies like the Social Security Administration, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) or Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The scammers will even text victims official-looking documents that include the seals of the agencies.
According to police, scammer will tell the victim that their Social Security number is compromised and they need to “protect” their money by withdrawing it from bank accounts. The scammers tell victims to either send money via wire transfers or by mailing cashiers checks, or the scammers tell the victims to convert their assets into gold…
