SF tech investor pours $9M into illegal dumping fight in Oakland

One week after voters rejected a parcel tax to fund illegal dumping cleanup and other core public services, a private foundation is stepping in to pay for what the electorate wouldn’t.

The Crankstart Foundation is giving Oakland $9.2 million to prevent and clean up illegal dumping. The grant will fund a three-year strategy focused on neighborhoods that are deluged with trash, city officials said today at a press conference.

Mayor Barbara Lee said the private grant is important because right now “every public sector dollar must be stretched further for our core public services.”…
