WESTLAKE, Ohio — Police say a 70-year-old North Olmsted man is in custody following a four-hour-long standoff at the Red Roof Inn in Westlake, which began after motel staff attempted to evict him from the property.
According to a press release, Red Roof Inn employees called law enforcement around 12:15 p.m. and claimed the man “was causing problems in the office and had argued with the staff while using inappropriate language.” His rental had expired at 11 a.m., but upon seeing officers, authorities said he went back into his room while showing authorities he had bear spray with him.
After failing for several hours to negotiate with the suspect, police said they began “tactically breaking out the windows to the room” and shooting pepper balls inside to no avail. SWAT officers were then called and an armored vehicle was used to break down the door before the man finally surrendered “peacefully.”…
