Just in time for summer, one of Tulsa’s greenways has a little more shade thanks to Up With Trees. The ecological nonprofit recently began planting 240 new trees between Adams Road and North 81st West Avenue along Katy Trail, the seven-mile paved pedestrian and biking path that connects downtown Tulsa to Sand Springs.
This also kicks off a larger, long-term beautification project for the trail system, in partnership with River Parks Authority, the Sand Springs Parks and Recreation Department and, most importantly, community members from the trail’s surrounding neighborhoods.
The Katy Trail project goes beyond just planting, however, aiming to develop a community vision that creates a more sustainable, connected and comfortable experience for all Tulsa and Sand Springs residents. This planting is just the first step in a long-term plan to gather community input, which will guide future improvements to Katy Trail and its surrounding park amenities. Residents are encouraged to share ideas, priorities or challenges they are facing through a public survey here.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Up With Trees plants and maintains tree sites in parks, neighborhoods and suburban areas through the dedicated and diverse community of volunteers.
