PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One hundred fifty swimmers dove into the Willamette River on Sunday for the sold-out inaugural Portland Mile race.
The event run by Nike Swim took place from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. It is an annual event to help support the Human Access Project.
“Cities around the world are rediscovering the power of swimming and direct access to the water,” said Portland Mile Event Director Chris Sullivan. “The Portland Mile is more than a race—it’s a celebration of Portland’s evolving relationship with the Willamette River. Every swimmer who enters the water becomes part of Portland’s ongoing story of reconnecting with the Willamette River.
