‘That’s all they have’: Roselawn’s sole grocery store will stay open

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – A Cincinnati neighborhood’s lone grocery store will not be closing after all, despite the owner’s retirement, Cincinnati Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney announced.

David Pearson’s Save A Lot has been Roselawn’s only grocery store, and the closest one to many folks living in Golf Manor, Bond Hill and Amberley Village since 2011. Before then, residents were living in a food desert – a geographic area that lacks access to fresh produce and nutritious food – for more than a year after the Kroger closed in 2010.

After 15 years of sourcing and selling produce, meats, various foods and household necessities, the 75-year-old owner announced he was ready to retire. Pearson searched for someone to take over the store, but did not find a viable buyer, sparking some anxiety in the community and fear that the area could become a food desert again…
