JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Emergency officials in Jefferson County, along with the National Weather Service, confirmed Monday that a tornado touched down Sunday afternoon in parts of the county.
The storm, which was classified as an EF1 tornado, occurred around 4:45 p.m. north of Anita in McCalmont Township. It had maximum wind speeds of 110 mph and caused damage to wooded areas and some properties, but no one was injured, according to Jefferson County Department of Emergency Services Director Tracy W. Zents.
The results were in consultation with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh and officials from the McCalmont Township Volunteer Fire Company. A majority of the damage happened in wooded areas, with numerous trees uprooted, snapped and twisted off, some as high as 20 to 30 feet. The storm also caused minor damage to some roofs and siding of homes and damaged some vehicles.
“This storm could have been much worse,” Zents said. “¼ mile south could have been devastating to the village of Anita. At this time, the weather service is listing this storm as an EF1. A drone team will be flying the area later today or tomorrow and based off of that information, the storm intensity may increase.”…
