Research: Caddo Parish wastewater shows highest methamphetamine levels in world

SHREVEPORT, La. — New research from Louisiana State University Shreveport reveals that methamphetamine levels found in Caddo Parish wastewater are among the highest recorded in the world.

The findings were presented to Caddo Parish commissioners during a meeting Monday. Researchers from the university said the local area has higher concentrations of the drug than traditional hotspots in Oklahoma and West Virginia.

In response, LSU Health is using more than $1 million received from Caddo Parish in 2024 as part of an opioid settlement fund. The university is using the seed money to explore innovative treatments for addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder, including the use of psychedelic drugs…
