UI Health Care to raze student housing for new childcare facility

University of Iowa Health Care is placing greater emphasis on childcare in its latest project.

An $8.9 million childcare facility was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents on Tuesday, June 16. The center will serve 104 children, replacing the existing UI Healthcare facility at Westlawn along Newton Road, which is also used by Carver College of Medicine faculty and staff.

Westlawn is scheduled for demolition as part of the University of Iowa’s 10-year facilities master plan due to “extensive deferred maintenance needs and costs.” The project will eliminate $2.3 million in deferred maintenance costs, according to board documents…
