New barber school prepares Mississippi inmates for careers after release

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) opened a new barber school at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF) in Rankin County, aimed at helping inmates gain job skills before returning to the community.

The program will allow inmates to earn barber certifications that can help them find employment after release.

“We have a certified barber shop and a barber school,” said CMCF Superintendent Matthew Reynolds. “We’re going to have inmates that are going to go through this program and become licensed barbers. When they get out, they’ll have that certification as well, so they can get jobs in barber shops across the state.”…
