Remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur could bring heavy rain, thunderstorms to the Lowcountry

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Lowcountry could feel impacts from what was briefly Tropical Storm Arthur, including heavy rain, gusty winds, and strong thunderstorms.

A tropical disturbance strengthened into Tropical Storm Arthur in the Gulf on Wednesday before weakening due to land interaction. As of early Thursday, the system was producing widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain near New Orleans and across the Gulf Coast as a post-tropical cyclone.

Forecasters say the storm’s remnants will be pulled into the jet stream and pushed east toward South Carolina, bringing an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms to the Lowcountry region.

What we’re watching:

  • A few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, with damaging winds as the primary concern.
  • A low-end risk of tornadoes exists, which is common with weakening tropical systems moving inland from the Gulf.
  • An elevated potential for heavy rainfall.
