A hawk’s rescue and recovery after poisoning draws attention to wildlife threats

CHARLESTON, S.C.(WCBD) – A young red-tailed hawk is recovering at the Center for Birds of Prey after being found in distress on the campus of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), shedding light on a growing threat to wildlife across the Lowcountry: rodenticide poisoning.

What began as a typical day at MUSC quickly turned into a wildlife rescue when Hannah McQueen, a MUSC resident and Center for Birds of Prey volunteer, noticed the juvenile hawk unable to fly and in an area of heavy foot traffic.

“It’s just abnormal for a juvenile hawk to be where he was,” McQueen said. “And he was in an area of high foot traffic, which is not safe for him or the people. So I called the center. She helped me evaluate the bird. I was like, yeah, we should collect him and bring him in for an evaluation.”…
