LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The season’s first wild big wildfires are burning in Lincoln County northeast of Las Vegas, described initially as fast-moving and caused by lightning strikes, according to the Bureau of Land Management.
The Kane Springs Fire has burned 5,700 acres, mostly short grass and brush, after it was discovered just before noon on Wednesday. The fire is 0% contained with about 73 firefighting personnel assigned to the scene. It’s on federal land 17 miles southwest of Caliente. BLM said crews, engines and aircraft are engaged in suppression efforts. The last update on the fire’s progress came early Wednesday evening.
The Grapevine Fire has burned 3,000 acres, according to an update Thursday morning. It’s in the Clover Mountain Wilderness Area about 10 miles southeast of Caliente. The fire is 0% contained and burning timber. The fire is described as extreme. The most recent report indicates 27 personnel are assigned to fight the fire, using ground and aerial resources.
