Anyone hitting the road Thursday afternoon to get an early start on Juneteenth or Father’s Day celebrations should keep an eye on the weather. Parts of Texas could see severe storms capable of producing large hail and even tornadoes.
Amarillo and its surrounding towns in the Texas Panhandle are seeing an increased risk of storms Thursday night that could bring frequent lightning, strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service’s Amarillo office. The storm watch runs from 7 a.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Friday, June 19. Amarillo is also under a Flash Flood Threat Thursday evening and night as heavy rain could bring 1-4 inches an hour to parts of the Southeast Texas Panhandle.
“While some spotty light sprinkles/showers can’t be ruled out today, storm chances ramp up later this evening-overnight across the eastern TX Panhandle,” NWS Amarillo writes. “Activity could become strong to severe with large hail and gusty winds the primary threats, along with locally heavy rainfall.”…
